Alderman Marco Stam (spatial quality, housing, and climate adaptation) is enthusiastic about the developments in Wielwijk: “It is so wonderful that we are achieving multiple goals at the same time in Wielwijk. Attractive new homes, safer traffic, a beautiful green park running through the neighborhood. And we are ensuring that the neighborhood can better handle heavy rain showers and heat. Wielwijk is really a model neighborhood for me!”
Wielwijk is also an exemplary neighborhood from an international perspective. Because what we are doing here in collaboration with local residents is still rare. Europe is watching this project with great interest. Hence their willingness to invest in Wielwijk and continue to collaborate in the coming years. How we approach the measurements with the neighborhood residents and what results emerge from them is valuable knowledge for Dordrecht and other European cities. They face the same questions about how to redesign their urban areas, taking into account the consequences of a changing climate.
Knowledge sharing
Other cities that collaborate with us in the Life Critical project are Bradford in the United Kingdom, the Belgian city of Ghent, and the Norwegian city of Bergen. We share with each other how we approach things in our city, what knowledge we gain, and how the partners can also apply this knowledge in their city.
